Remote Contribution for Cloud Production
A leading international sports broadcaster, renowned for delivering both news and high-quality live coverage of major motorsport events, required a modern remote production solution. Their goal was to minimise on-site footprint while maintaining broadcast-grade quality, operational flexibility, and reliability for global audiences.
Elliott Media’s broadcast technology consultancy and system integration Teams were engaged to design, deploy, and support a cloud-based
remote production environment tailored to their needs. The resulting solution leveraged AWS cloud infrastructure, integrated vMix live production software, and enabled remote contribution from presenters and guests via Teams.
Challenges of the requirement included:
- Geographic Distribution: Talent and contributors were located across multiple continents, with no centralized studio environment.
- High Production Standards: The broadcaster required flawless delivery for marquee motorsport coverage with stringent quality control and zero downtime.
- Real-Time Collaboration: Directors, vision mixers, and audio engineers needed real-time communication (“talkback”) with remote contributors, independently from the on-air program feed.
- Visibility & Control: Production staff demanded comprehensive visibility of all live feeds and contributors, without latency or signal degradation.
Elliott Media’s Solution:
1. AWS Cloud Production Environment
Using AWS as the core infrastructure platform, a secure and scalable environment with elastic compute resources tailored for real-time video processing was provisioned. Key components included:
Virtualized vMix production servers hosted in AWS EC2 instances.
- Secure VPN and private networking for remote control and monitoring.
- High-availability architecture for live reliability and redundancy.
2.vMix Live Production Engine
vMix was chosen as the production core due to its:
- Support for up to 4K production.
- Seamless integration with vMix Call for remote contributors.
- Flexible input/output routing including NDI and SDI over IP.
3.Multi-Platform Contribution Workflow
The system supported remote feeds via:
- Microsoft Teams & Zoom: Integrated via capture nodes and hybrid bridges to allow flexible talent participation across platforms.
- vMix Call: For low-latency, high-quality contributor inputs.
4.Advanced Talkback System
Talkback infrastructure was designed to:
- Enable real-time, isolated communications between production crew and individual remote contributors.
- Use dedicated intercom channels and virtual audio routing within the AWS environment.
- Operate completely independently of program output, ensuring clear, uninterrupted direction and coordination.
5.Remote Multiview Access
Production teams were given full situational awareness via a live, cloud-hosted multiviewer system, offering;
- Real-time display of all feeds, including program, preview, and contributor sources.
- Accessible via secure web interface for producers, directors, and engineers from any location with minimal latency.

The system was rolled out in phases and underwent rigorous testing ahead of the motorsport season. Highlights of its performance include:
